FEATURED TEACHER OF THE MONTH:

JILLIAN TIBURZI

Meet Jillian! Jillian began her practice in 2010 for the physical benefits, but soon realized the deeper benefits of yoga. She found the more she committed to her practice, the more challenging mental aspects of staying present and moving with intention began to manifest in day to day life. Jillian acknowledges the individuality of each person and the story they share with the universe and hopes to influence their path through yoga. We love Jillian because she is kind, inspiring, and holds space for everyone through her open-heart teachings. Q: Tell us a bit about how you found yoga?
A: My gateway in to yoga was definitely physical. Growing up I was always involved in sports and in high school I began taking yoga classes at the gym I joined. In 2016 my mom came home with information regarding a teacher training at Tovami Yoga in Mamaroneck. I had never taken a class there before but I registered and dropped off my deposit days later. Looking back on my practice before my training, I have NO idea what I had even thought yoga was. My practice has so drastically evolved and I am so grateful for the experiences that have shaped it.

Q: What can someone expect when coming to your class?
A: Expect the unexpected! Haha just kidding...kind of! I always teach from a place of efficacy so whatever is showing up on my own personal mat is usually what arrives in class. This means a pretty gentle/restorative pose with breath work to start, some time to flow, and then cooling back down with again some more gentle/yin like poses. Come check it out!

Q: What’s something about you that no one would expect?
A: I participated in 5 different study abroad programs during my undergrad including Uganda, Mexico, Italy, Spain and Costa Rica. All such different incredible experiences!

Q:If you had to choose- favorite yoga pose?
A: Hmmm..I’d have to say Ardha Chandra Chapasana, Sugarcane pose. For me it’s the perfect balance of integrating strength, stability and flexibility. It’s a pose that takes work to get to but feels like a release when I get there. Both physically and mentally. I can genuinely feel when my body stacks and comes into alignment in this pose, where everything just “clicks” into place, and it feels really good.

Q: Favorite song?
A: To be honest I don't know if I have a favorite song haha! My taste in music has always been all over the place. But I can say I have a definitive favorite quote: “stories are beings.” I could talk for a long time to describe exactly what this means to me but on the surface level it’s the idea that ‘stories’ or our experiences is what makes a person who they are.
